ExeVir Announces Close of $50 million/ EUR42 million Series A Financing

Belgium, March 16th, 2021: ExeVir, which is developing single domain antibody therapies providing broad protection against viral infections, today announces that it has closed its Series A financing raising a total of EUR 42 million / US$50 million. The financing was led by Fund+ with VIB, UCB Ventures, SFPI-FPIM, V-Bio Ventures and new investors SRIW, Noshaq, Vives IUF, SambrInvest, as well as several Belgian family offices.
ExeVir will use the financing to commence the global phase 1b/2 clinical trial of lead compound XVR011 that is scheduled to start shortly. The company also plans to develop a VHH72-Fc sub-cutaneous formulation for Covid-19 in parallel and accelerate development of its pipeline beyond Covid-19 in infectious diseases.

The single domain antibody (VHH) technology platform was developed by VIB-UGent scientists, Professors Xavier Saelens and Nico Callewaert. Based on the recent research published in BioRxiv by the VIB scientists on the XVR011 antibody, which demonstrated highly potent and broad neutralizing activity and infection protection against SARS-Cov-2, variants of concern and related coronaviruses, the XVR011 antibody is expected to be effective against SARS-Cov-2 and importantly, its rapidly spreading variants and other Sarbecoviruses to emerge in future.

Ces fonds ont été réunis par Fund+ ainsi que le VIB, UCB Ventures, la SFPI et V-Bio Ventures, mais aussi par de nouveaux investisseurs : la SRIW, Noshaq, Vives IUF, SambrInvest, ainsi que plusieurs Family Offices belges.
ExeVir utilisera ce financement pour lancer les essais cliniques de phase 1b/2 à l’échelle mondiale sur le composé principal XVR011, qui doivent commencer prochainement. L’entreprise prévoit également de développer en parallèle une formulation sous-cutanée du VHH72-Fc pour le traitement de la Covid-19 et accélérer le développement de son portefeuille sur les maladies infectieuses, au-delà de la Covid-19.

La plateforme d’anticorps à domaine unique (VHH) a été développée par des chercheurs du VIB-UGent : les professeurs Xavier Saelens et Nico Callewaert. Basée sur l’étude récemment publiée sur BioRxiv par les chercheurs du VIB concernant l’anticorps XVR011, qui démontre une puissante et vaste activité de neutralisation et de protection contre les infections au SARS-CoV-2, contre les variants inquiétants et d’autres coronavirus apparentés, l’anticorps XVR011 devrait être efficace contre le SARS-CoV-2 et, plus important encore, contre ses variants à diffusion rapide ainsi que contre d’autres sarbecovirus susceptibles d’apparaître à l’avenir.

Het bedrijf kondigt vandaag de afsluiting aan vaneen Serie A kapitaalronde van 42 miljoen euro ($ 50 miljoen USD). De financieringsronde werd geleid door Fund+, samen met VIB, UCB Ventures, SFPI-FPIM en V-Bio Ventures, de nieuwe investeerders SRIW, Noshaq, Vives IUF , SambrInvest, evenals verscheidene Belgische ‘family offices’.
ExeVir zal de financiering gebruiken voor de globale fase van de 1b/2 klinische proef voor het XVR011 kandidaat-geneesmiddel, een studie welke binnenkort van start gaat. De onderneming wil tegelijkertijd ook een onderhuidse toedieningsvorm van VHH72-Fc voor Covid-19 ontwikkelen en de ontwikkeling versnellen van haar pijplijn voor andere infectieziekten.

Het technologieplatform op basis van antilichamen met een enkelvoudige domein structuur (VHH) werd ontwikkeld door professor Xavier Saelens en Nico Callewaert, twee wetenschappers van VIB-UGent. Hun recent gepubliceerde onderzoek in BioRxiv toont aan dat het XVR011 antilichaam een krachtige en brede neutraliserende werking heeft en bescherming biedt tegen infectie met SARS-CoV-2, de nieuwe varianten en gerelateerde coronavirussen. Het XVR011 antilichaam is naar verwachting effectief tegen SARS-CoV-2 en de zich snel verspreidende varianten en andere sarbecovirussen die zich in toekomst kunnen ontwikkelen.
