ExeVir Bio Appoints Michel Kazatchkine and Stef Heylen to the Board of Directors

Belgium, 3 Nov 2020: ExeVir, which is developing nanobody therapies providing broad protection against viral infections, including a lead candidate for coronaviruses, today announced that Michel Kazatchkine and Stef Heylen have been appointed to the Board. Both strengthen ExeVir’s Board by adding pertinent R&D, in depth infectious disease and significant global health experience as ExeVir moves from preclinical to clinical with its lead candidate XVR011.
Professor Michel Kazatchkine, joining as an independent director, brings over 35 years of experience in global health and has played key roles in various organizations, serving as Director of the National Agency for Research on AIDS in France, Chair of the WHOs Strategic and Technical Committee on HIV/AIDS, the French Ambassador on HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases and Executive Director of The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria from 2007 to 2012. He then served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and Special Advisor to the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS. Michel Kazatchkine is Emeritus Professor of Immunology at René Descartes University in Paris. He is a Senior Fellow with the Global Health Centre of the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies in Geneva. He attended medical school at Necker-Enfants-Malades in Paris, studied immunology at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and completed postdoctoral fellowships at St. Mary’s hospital in London and Harvard Medical School.
Stef Heylen representing SFPI-FPIM on the board, brings over 30 years of pharmaceutical drug development and executive management experience over a wide range of therapeutic and functional areas. He has previously held senior positions as Managing Director of Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, Belgium, and Chief Operating Officer, Development, Janssen R&D globally. Stef was a member of the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals Group Operating Committee. Stef obtained his M.D. at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium.

ExeVir is developing an antiviral response discovery platform with highly innovative and clinically validated nanobody technology. Its lead candidate, XVR011 anti-SARS-COV-1/2 nanobody has best in class potential targeting a unique epitope and broad coverage which significantly reduces its risk of viral escape. Its pipeline within and beyond SARS-COV-1/2 from hospitalised to recently diagnosed patients to prophylaxis could support the ringfencing of an outbreak, protect healthcare workers, and support those at increased risk of severe illness from Covid-19.

Ils consolident tous deux le conseil d’administration d’ExeVir grâce à leur immense et précieuse expérience dans les domaines de la R&D, des maladies infectieuses et de la santé mondiale alors qu’ExeVir débute les essais cliniques avec son candidat vaccin XVR011.
Le professeur Michel Kazatchkine, qui nous rejoint en tant qu’administrateur indépendant, apporte plus de 35 ans d’expérience dans le domaine de la santé mondiale. Il a joué un rôle important auprès de différentes organisations : directeur de l’Agence publique française de recherches sur le SIDA et les hépatites virales, président du Comité consultatif stratégique et technique sur le VIH/SIDA de l’OMS, ambassadeur chargé de la lutte contre le VIH/SIDA et les maladies transmissibles, puis directeur exécutif du Fonds Mondial de lutte contre le SIDA, la tuberculose et le paludisme de 2007 à 2012. Il a également été nommé envoyé spécial du secrétaire général de l’ONU sur le VIH/SIDA en Europe de l’Est et en Asie Centrale et conseiller spécial auprès du Programme commun des Nations Unies sur le VIH/SIDA. Michel Kazatchkine est professeur émérite d’immunologie à l’Université René Descartes de Paris et associé principal avec le Centre de santé mondiale de l’Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement de Genève. Il a suivi ses études à la faculté de médecine Necker-Enfants-Malades à Paris, étudié l’immunologie à l’Institut Pasteur et mené des recherches postdoctorales à l’hôpital St Mary de Londres et à la faculté de médecine de Harvard.
Stef Heylen, qui représente la SFPI auprès du conseil d’administration, apporte plus de 30 ans d’expérience en matière de haute direction et de développement de médicaments dans de très nombreux domaines thérapeutiques et fonctionnels. Outre ses postes de directeur général de Janssen Pharmaceutica NV en Belgique et de directeur opérationnel du développement de Janssen R&D à l’échelle mondiale, il a siégé au conseil d’administration du groupe pharmaceutique Johnson & Johnson. Stef Heylen est docteur en médecine diplômé de l’université de Louvain (Belgique) et de l’Institut de médecine tropicale Prince Léopold d’Anvers (Belgique).

ExeVir développe une plateforme pour la découverte d’une réponse antivirale grâce à une technologie très innovante à base de nanocorps qui a été validée cliniquement. Son principal candidat, le nanocorps XVR011 anti-SARS-COV-1/2, présente le plus haut potentiel ciblant un épitope unique et une large couverture, réduisant ainsi considérablement le risque d’échappement viral. Son portefeuille, pour les SARS-COV-1/2, mais aussi au-delà, visant les patients hospitalisés, ceux ayant été diagnostiqués récemment ou la prophylaxie, peut contribuer à circonscrire une épidémie, à protéger le personnel soignant et à aider les personnes susceptibles de contracter une forme sévère de la COVID-19.

De twee nieuwe bestuurders versterken de raad met hun relevante ervaring in R&D, infectieziekten en mondiale gezondheidszorg, terwijl het eerste kandidaat-product van ExeVir, XVR011, van het preklinische naar het klinische stadium overgaat.
Professor Michel Kazatchkine, die als onafhankelijk bestuurder tot de raad toetreedt, heeft meer dan 35 jaar ervaring in de mondiale gezondheidszorg en speelde een cruciale rol in diverse organisaties. Hij was directeur van het Franse Agence nationale française pour la recherche sur le sida et les hépatites virales, voorzitter van het Strategic and Technical Committee on HIV/AIDS van de WGO, Frans ambassadeur voor HIV/AIDS en overdraagbare ziekten, en executive director van het Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria van 2007 tot 2012. Vervolgens was hij speciaal gezant van de secretaris-generaal van de VN voor HIV/AIDS in Oost-Europa en Centraal-Azië, en speciaal adviseur van het gezamenlijk VN-programma voor HIV/AIDS. Michel Kazatchkine is professor emeritus Immunologie aan de Université René Descartes in Parijs en senior fellow van het Global Health Centre of the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies in Genève. Hij studeerde geneeskunde aan de KU Leuven en het Prins Leopold Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde in Antwerpen.
